Really it's just similarities they look for (as well as ip).

So just say somebody called Joan Smith signs up, and seconds later Joanne Smith gets referred by Joan, then they're probably going to think something dodgy is going on and take a closer look. (Bit of a crap example as I'm sure nobody is stupid enough to do this, but it applies to addresses, post codes, e-mail addresses etc, as well).

You'd be surprised at how simple the measures they take are.

In my early freebie days, I had once signed up to Freepay, then a few days later used next door's wireless connection (from the same laptop) and signed up using a fake address.

The second address I signed up on was put on hold because some of the details were probably wrong (or they had already signed up, which would be quite unlucky for them Confused), but it didn't affect my real account apart from the loss of a green.

I seriously would recommend against this of course, as 9/10 times they will find out and put you on hold, as well as the fact that connecting to another person's internet without permission is illegal. (Yes it is very hypocritical of me to say this, but as I mentioned this was when I first started out and I haven't done it since...)

p.s. I'm happy to confess this now because I've already got my gift from them, and I'm not actually looking for anything at the moment which means it won't affect me. If anybody does decide to experiment on this sort of thing (maybe on a site they don't really care about) although you shouldn't anyway - just don't tell people about it, especially on a forum such as this Wink

The amount of effort and risk involved in trying to beat the system far outweighs the effort needed to play the game and win legitimately.

If you do want to cheat, make sure you know the rules of the game first! If you had to ask this question then the chance are you don't.

I agree.

It will be mostly IP address and address. The most common error is people getting family that live at same address to sign up.

I doubt they would be allowed to track your MAC address, and if they did your ISP wouldnt be happy with you changing your mac address

The MAC address seen by a website is tied to your Internet facing networking device. For most people, this is a router with their local network behind it in a NAT set up. Very few ISPs care what router you use, let alone notice that it has been changed.

If you really care about this (and you shouldnt) then you can get hold of a little piece of software that spoofs your MAC addres.

What about if its someone at work who has signed up?

I signed up at work, and then got my work colleague to also sign up. We both have the same IP address. How would that affect it?

If you refer someone who signs up from the same IP then expect them to look into your account.

If the hostname or network information clearly indicates that it is a corporate network then you may be able to convince them you got a colleauge to sign up.

But if it was the Giveaway network then you can probably forget about that account, they are pretty strict with their rules.
