Oh dear, I feel so old…

I reckon the best description of my career would be 'Tinkerer' (!) or 'Dilettante' as I've been trained for stuff I'm no longer doing, and am now doing stuff I haven't been trained for.

School was disappointing and I couldn't wait for VI Form, where the academic atmosphere was said to be better.

It wasn't.

So after messing about as a sculptor for a year in Germany, I came back and tried for a degree in Photography. The academic atmosphere was said to be better. I believed it.

It wasn't that great; got ca.£15K in debt.

I then messed about as a photographer for a year.

Unemployed -> Worked in a shop -> Moved to London -> Worked as a Bike Courier (Happy times) -> Worked for Apple Computer, Selling things -> Got trained to fix Apple Macs - > Worked in Apple Customer Services (charming the Public) -> Took intensive course in teaching English Language -> Unemployment -> Building Site (!) -> Teaching English Foreigners.

Career = move swiftly and in an uncontrolled way in a specified direction (!).

Anyone else have so many jobs?

When I left school I went to college to study computer networking and dropped out after about 8 months, not because I didn't like the subject but the tutor was about 65 and sometimes it felt like we were teaching him the subject.

Then went into computer programming in the fabulous language of Pascal.

Needed some money so got a job as a barman when I was 17!! shhh!!

Whilst working as a barman I was offered an apprenticeship in Bar & Hospitality Management. I completed this in 3 years and went on to run a local pub for about 3 years.

It didn't pay quite enough but gave me the opportunity to do some learn from home studying and I qualified as a Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician.

Shortly after qualifying I got a job at Pipex on the broadband support and jumped at the change of career. On the day we finished our training we were told that Tiscali had taken over the company and were closing the offices down within 6 months.

I then found a job with Virgin Media in Liverpool and have worked there quite happily for 8 months whilst studying for an MCTS in C#.Net programming language.

Hopefully will complete my studies soon and get a well paid programming job. But probably should be studying now instead of typing this out but there you go.
